EVENTS: SHINE – a Benefit for Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) Relief Efforts Using poetry, dance, and music to help our kababayans

“SHINE – a Benefit for Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) Relief Efforts” is sponsored by Sandiwa (National Alliance of Filipino American Youth) and NAFCON (the National Alliance of Filipino Concerns.) It is a celebration amidst the chaos, a show of the bayanihan spirit between our local community and the motherland. Through a cross-collaboration with various community partners, SHINE is a night of poetry, dance, and music for the survivors of Typhoon Ondoy/Ketsana by local Philippine-American and APIA artists based in New York. All proceeds from admission will go straight to MIGRANTE International in the Philippines, a non-profit group directly working with survivors and relief efforts.

On September 26th, Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) struck the Philippines with a force that hasn’t been seen in decades. Over a month’s worth of rain fell in one day, causing tremendous damage to 26 provinces, and putting the capital of Manila up to 80% underwater. The initial death toll is at 246 men, women, and children; hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced, watching their houses, possessions, and lives disappear in the flood. Whole neighborhoods swept away, while in manila, the typhoon disabled the majority of medical facilities. To get a glimpse of what is happening there with your own eyes, click here:
